That 10-Minute Clock: My Story as a GP

The sterile smell of the consulting room, the ticking clock on the wall – it all felt familiar. Too familiar. Another day, another 10-minute appointment. I greet the patient, a hurried smile and a "What brings you in today?"

The poor patient has a a list of concerns that comes tumbling out, worries piling up. A complex medical history, a litany of symptoms, a deep-seated anxiety about their health. All crammed into that tiny window of time.

The next patient is waiting, their appointment slot looming. The urge to cut the patient off sets in, to steer the conversation back on track, to get to the "important" bits.

But what were the important bits? Was it the rash, the cough, the blood pressure reading? Or was it the fear in their eyes, the sense of isolation, the feeling of being unheard?

I remember one patient in particular, a very nice lady in her 60s, came in with a long list of concerns. Hot flashes, insomnia, mood swings – menopause was wreaking havoc on her life. She felt lost, confused, and overwhelmed.

I did my best, of course. I prescribed some medication, offered some basic advice, and scheduled a follow-up appointment. But as she left, I couldn't shake the feeling that I hadn't really helped her. I hadn't had the time to truly listen, to understand the impact these symptoms were having on her life, to address her concerns holistically. Ive had many of these experiences over the past few years.

It started to feet like I was constantly putting out fires, treating symptoms rather than addressing the underlying issues.

That's why I decided to set up Pembrokeshire Medical. I wanted to create a GP practice where I could offer my patients longer appointments and more personalised care.
